On October 5, 2014, President Obama dedicated the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. It’s moving and worth a stop, here in DC, down by the Capitol and the Botanical Gardens.
How the memorial came to be is kind of a great story: a chance meeting at the Vietnam Memorial, strange bedfellows working together in a tenacious fight against bureaucracy, backroom legislative deals, heartbreaking opposition from the folks you’d least expect. There are wild puzzles of construction and urban infrastructure. At one point Gary Sinise gets involved.
I confess I didn’t know any of this on October 11, when we wandered through after visiting the Botanical Gardens. But we stopped to see the water and the flame and the other folks passing by.
