The Shinkansen was everything amazing that you hear about it: smooth and comfortable and blisteringly fast. But it was the mountains, growing on the horizon, that made me hold my breath. From Tokyo, the endless city gradually gave way to tidy rice farms, here and there, until suddenly the green volcanic foothills rose up and engulfed us.
