We drove the long way out of Westcliffe, north to Salida to get around the Sangres, then turned south into the San Luis Valley, down its length, past that UFO watchtower on route 17.

It was easy to see clouds gathering behind us—miles and miles away, up the impossibly flat rift valley. But we were on our way back before the storm caught up with us. Driving north, we could see thick curtains of rain scouring the valley ahead, watched them approach, then the storm hit us and passed in an instant, leaving the straight wet road glistening, back in the sun.
